VIDEO: Neither firefighters nor police have been able to find source
A loud explosion and boom were heard for about a seven-kilometre radius in Welland but police have been unable to determine its source.
Around 9:16 p.m. on Dec. 27, Welland / Pelham police officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) responded to a report of the explosion. Officers initially went to the area of Burgar Street Park but were unable to find any fires or evidence of an explosion.
Officers then went to the area of Harrison Avenue and Gladys Avenue (Lincoln Avenue / Memorial Park Drive area) and found members of the public who captured footage of a red/orange flash followed by a boom/explosion sound that occurred at 9:10 p.m. Welland Fire Services and Welland Hydro weren’t able to determine the source of the noise.
NRPS say that at the time of the incident some areas of Welland were experiencing fog. They say a side effect of a low weather ceiling and fog can possibly be an increased effect of loud noises such as fireworks. But people have taken to social media saying that they know what fireworks sounds like – even in the fog – and it wasn’t fireworks.
The cause of the noise still hasn’t been determined as of Thursday mid-morning.
