A Brampton man has been arrested after photos of a University of Guelph student were posted on a pornography site without her knowledge.
The Campus Safety Office and Guelph Police Service began investigating in February after a student learned non-intimate photos of her had been posted online. The photos appeared to have been taken without her knowledge inside her on-campus residence.
There was also a photo of a bra, which caused the victim to check her drawers and locate a bra with possible bodily fluids on it. That photo appeared to have been taken inside the bathroom of the same residence.
On Tuesday an 18-year-old Brampton man – who is the boyfriend of the victim’s former roommate — was arrested for break and enter, voyeurism, mischief and criminal harassment. He will appear in court October 28.
$5,500 lost in international scam
Residents are reminded to be cautious when dealing with unknown individuals online after a Guelph woman lost $5,500 through an international scam.
On Tuesday police were called to an east-end address. A woman in her 50s advised she was seeking pain management advice online when she was contacted through Tik Tok by someone claiming to be a US Army surgeon stationed in Yemen. They corresponded a couple of times, before the complainant received a message from someone else claiming the doctor had been arrested and needed assistance getting out of the country. The victim transferred $5,500 through a money transferring app.
When she was asked to send more money, she instead contacted police. Officers were able to determine the transferred funds were collected through a vendor in Germany, but no further investigation is possible.
Residents are encouraged to be wary of any telephone call, email or text which requires you to take immediate action. It is always best to independently contact the supposed sender and confirm the legitimacy of the correspondence before acting.
Anyone who suspects they have been the victim of cybercrime or fraud should report it to their local police and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s online reporting system or by phone at 1-888-495-8501. Even if no financial loss has been sustained, interactions can still be reported to the CAFC.
Male sought in vandalism spree
The Guelph Police Service is seeking the public’s help as we investigate a vandalism spree in a north-end neighbourhood.
On August 13, police were notified 12 residential garbage bins along Verney Street had been defaced with spray-painted images of male genitalia. The damage was estimated by the city at nearly $700 to clean or replace the bins.
Two weeks later, a resident called to report someone had knocked over the green and grey bins at every home on the north side of the street. Security video appeared to depict the same person involved in both incidents.
Anyone with information or who recognizes the man in the attached images is asked to call Constable Todd Van Iersel at 519-824-1212, ext. 7557, email tvaniersel@guelphpolice.ca, leave an anonymous message for Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or leave an anonymous tip online at www.csgw.tips.
