Suspected car thief 33-year-old Joel Vandecaveye of Alix, Alberta, didn’t get very far after keen officers from Vermilion RCMP spotted him.
They did a search of the plate and the vehicle showed up that it was stolen out of British Columbia.
Trying to avoid arrest, Vandecaveye gave police a false name because he was on conditions from a court ordered release order. His identity was determined and he was charged with failing to comply with a release order, identity fraud, and possession of illegal non-taxed cigarettes.
It isn’t clear why the police didn’t charge him with possession of a stolen vehicle.
Vandecaveye will be sitting in a jail cell for the holidays. He was brought before a Justice of the Peace and remanded in custody with the next court date set for Jan. 9, 2024, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Lloydminster.
Sergeant Corey Buckingham from the Vermilion RCMP commended officers’ pro-active policing saying, “Recovery of this reported stolen vehicle was a direct result of our Detachment’s pro-active policing efforts. Kudos to the members involved.”
