NANAIMO, B.C., —Nanaimo RCMP is investigating a fire that caused extensive damage to the Nanaimo Judo Club, located at 110 Machleary St. The fire was reported just before 5 AM on Saturday July 11, 2026.
Police were called to assist Nanaimo Fire Rescue. Initial reports from fire crews, it appeared that the fire originated in an exterior stairwell on the north side of the building before spreading into the structure through a ventilation system, then into the attic. Fire crews were able to contain the fire to the building with no secondary damage reported to other structures. There was extensive smoke and water damage throughout the interior of the building.
Witnesses in the area reported seeing flames but did not observe anyone leaving the scene. The cause of the fire is considered undetermined, and it remains under investigation. If anyone has information on the incident, please call Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
