A 51-year-old man has been sentenced following a firearms incident in Basswood Ridge, New Brunswick, that occurred nearly three years ago. Bryan Sheppard was sentenced on April 23, 2025, to two years and one month in a federal penitentiary, alongside a 10-year weapons prohibition.
The incident took place on April 24, 2022, when members of the St. Stephen RCMP detachment responded to a report of a firearm being discharged at two individuals near a residence in Basswood Ridge. According to police, the suspect fled the scene before officers arrived, and fortunately, no one was injured during the altercation.
Two days later, on April 26, 2022, police tracked down and arrested Sheppard in connection with the incident. The following day, he appeared in Saint John Provincial Court and was formally charged with discharging a firearm with intent.
In December 2024, Sheppard stood trial before a Court of King’s Bench Judge and Jury in Saint John, N.B., where he was found guilty of discharging a firearm while being reckless as to the life or safety of another person.
In addition to his prison term, he will be prohibited from possessing any firearms for the next 10 years.
