Detective Sergeant Trevor Grieve from the Toronto Police Homicide and Missing Persons Unit updated the media on the homicide.
Toronto police arrested Adimabua Chukwuka, 31, of Toronto, on March 21 and charged him with first-degree murder in the death of Mario Ferreira, 60, of Toronto, outside of the U of T campus.
“From what I can see on the surveillance, I do not see any sort of altercation that occurs between the victim and the suspect,” said Detecitve Sergeant Trevor Grieve told reporters during a news conference on March 21. “I am treating this as a completely random incident.”
Grieve said that the suspect was seen arming himself with “debris,” which they believe he picked up from a dumpster or construction site in the area.
On Thursday, March 20, 2025, at approximately 8:21 a.m., emergency services responded to a call in the Queen’s Park Crescent and College Street area.
Police released photos of the suspect and a member of the public recognized the man and called 911 to inform police.

Chukwuka appeared at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre, 2201 Finch Avenue West, on Saturday, March 22, 2025.
Past news releases from Toronto police reveal Chukwuka was previously charged with violent crimes in separate incidents. In August 2014 he was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and failing to comply with probation in multiple stabbings. In April 2022, he was charged in two more incidents where he pulled a knife on a man and stole his cellphone, and stabbed another man twice in the chest during an argument.
Toronto Police would like to thank the public for their assistance with this investigation.
This is Toronto’s 5th Homicide of 2025.
