A Montreal Police officer, Williams Bélanger, 27, has been charged with assault after allegedly fracturing an Indigenous man’s skull outside a homeless shelter during a police intervention.
Bélanger has pleaded not guilty to one charge of assault causing bodily harm. His trial is in January 2025.
In security camera footage of the incident, Bélanger is seen pushing Johnny Inukpak Tukalak, who falls backwards against the concrete sidewalk.
The police intervention at the homeless shelter took place in May 2022.
