A member of the RCMP-led unit created to detect and disrupt threats to Canada has instead been arrested.
BOWEN ISLAND, BC — An investigation by the RCMP’s Federal Policing – Pacific Region Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) has resulted in several charges against a former RCMP officer in British Columbia.
Michael Scoretz, 47, of Bowen Island was arrested on June 4, and charged with six counts of unauthorized communication of special operational information contrary to the Security of Information Act (SOIA), and seven counts of breach of trust under the Criminal Code.
“It is deeply troubling when a member of law enforcement is drawn into any kind of criminal allegations,” said Inspector Bryan Pyatt of Pacific Region INSET. “It is unsettling for the public and for fellow law enforcement officers. However, the results of this investigation show a deep commitment by our investigators to hold individuals’ accountable no matter their employment or background.”
In his former role as a police officer with INSET – Pacific Region, Scoretz was bound with secrecy under the Security of Information Act.
The charges allege that work-related material was found at the suspect’s home and that he shared protected and/or classified information with individuals he was in a relationship with, contrary to SOIA.
The offences are alleged to have occurred between August 2020 to February 2023, while he was working with Pacific Region’s INSET. The officer joined the RCMP in 2009 and retired in 2025.
The Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) is a network of multi-agency counter-terrorism, counter-espionage, and counter-foreign interference units led by the RCMP. Established to investigate national security-related criminal threats, INSETs bring together federal, provincial, and municipal law enforcement alongside intelligence agencies to protect Canada.
None of the charges involve current national security investigations, nor were any investigations compromised as a result of these incidents.
As this investigation is now before the courts, the RCMP will not be providing further details.
