About $6.5 million worth of cocaine was intercepted by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and RCMP.
On Jan. 10, CBSA said they arrested 35-year-old Sukhwinder Dhanju of Brampton, Ont., and charged him with importation of cocaine and possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
Dhanju, who lives in Brampton, was released with conditions and appears at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines, Ont., on Feb. 2.
The cocaine was seized on Sept. 26, 2023, after a truck driven by a commercial truck driver at the primary inspection booth at the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge port of entry in Niagara-on-the Lake, Ont., was searched.
Border services officers discovered 202 brick-shaped objects. The objects tested positive for suspected cocaine with a total weight of 233 kg. The driver was arrested by the CBSA and transferred to the custody of the RCMP Border Integrity Unit, along with the suspected narcotics.
Jeff Walters, District Director, Niagara District Operations, Canada Border Services Agency, said the diligence of our border services officers led to this significant seizure of cocaine.
