The driver of a stolen vehicle collided head-on with a marked police vehicle. In the vehicle, Kyle Enns, 30, had a loaded rifle.
Enns, from Grunthal, is charged with assault on a peace officer with a weapon, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, flight from a peace officer, possession of property obtained by crime, possession of a firearm in a vehicle, possession of a firearm while unauthorized, unsafe storage of a firearm, and three counts of failing to comply with court ordered conditions.
He has been remanded into custody until his next court appearance.
The incident happened on Dec. 29, 2023, at approximately 11:55 pm, after Steinbach RCMP received a report of a suspicious vehicle on Highway 52, in Mitchell. Checks on the vehicle determined it was stolen.
Officers made patrols but didn’t locate the vehicle until a second call was received at approximately 1:05 a.m. advising the vehicle was on Road 19N, in the RM of De Salaberry.
Officers from Steinbach and St-Pierre-Jolys responded. When officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the vehicle fled and collided head-on with one of the marked police vehicles.
The driver of the stolen vehicle was arrested and taken to hospital as a precaution.
A search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of a loaded rifle, an imitation handgun and prescription drugs.
The officer involved in the collision was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
