Montreal police have arrested two 19-year-old men in connection with a pair of violent firearm-related incidents last month, a fatal shooting in Montréal-Nord and a brazen daytime shootout in Rivière-des-Prairies, Pointe-aux-Trembles.
The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) announced the arrests in a Wednesday news release, stating that the suspects were linked to both the June 27 homicide of a 19-year-old man and a July 11 gunfight involving multiple vehicles.
The first incident occurred just after 9:15 p.m. on June 27, when officers were called to the intersection of Maurice-Duplessis Boulevard and Matte Avenue in Montréal-Nord. There, they found a young man suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper body. He was rushed to the hospital but later died from his injuries.
The victim, whose identity has not been released, became Montreal’s 18th homicide of 2024. Police say one of the now-arrested suspects was directly involved in the killing.
On July 11, the same suspect, along with the second 19-year-old now in custody, allegedly took part in a shootout in Rivière-des-Prairies, Pointe-aux-Trembles. According to the SPVM, the pair were in a vehicle with three other passengers near Perras and Saint-Jean Baptiste boulevards when they exchanged gunfire with occupants of another car.
The second vehicle, carrying four men, fled the scene but was later intercepted by Laval police. Meanwhile, the two accused abandoned their own car and escaped on foot, leaving their three companions behind.
Both suspects appeared at the Montreal courthouse on Thursday to face multiple charges. One has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the June homicide, while the second faces counts of attempted murder, discharging a firearm, and violating bail conditions.
