LANGFORD, B.C., — On June 13 at approximately 4:40 a.m., West Shore RCMP officers responded to several complaints regarding a commercial transport truck travelling against traffic in the wrong lane on the Trans Canada Hwy.
Callers advised the truck was travelling north bound in the south bound lanes near the Helmcken Rd exit.
Officers immediately attended the area and located the truck, attempted to pull it over. The truck failed to stop initially, but later came to a stop near the Leigh Rd exit.
The driver who is identified as a 52-year-old man from the Vancouver area, was arrested for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. Upon further investigation, police ruled out drug or alcohol impairment, and it appears that driver confusion contributed to the driving actions.
The truck was towed and the driver was issued violation tickets under the Motor Vehicle Act for:
- Drive without due care and attention ($368 fine and 6 penalty points)
- Failure to stop for police ($144 fine and 3 penalty points)
There were no report of injuries or collisions due to this incident. The driver was subsequently released pending further investigation and referrals to Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement branch and the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles.
