Quick action by New Brunswick RCMP officers and members of the public saved three individuals who had ended up in the water following a single-vehicle crash in Caraquet, N.B.
On Nov. 30, 2023, at approximately 8:30 a.m., members of the Caraquet RCMP detachment responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash on Chemin Saint-Simon, where a vehicle had left the roadway, and ended up in the water.
When police arrived at the scene, they located the vehicle which was submersed so deep in water that only the top of the roof was visible. Police also learned that there were three occupants in the vehicle, one of which had already made it to shore safely.
The other two occupants were still in the water, and were struggling to make it to shore.
Given the freezing temperatures and concern for the health and safety of the two individuals, an officer from the Caraquet detachment quickly sprang into action and entered the water. Treading freezing water up to his duty belt, he was able to reach the two individuals, and help them get to shore.
Two of the three occupants of the vehicle were transported to hospital as a precaution.
“The quick response and selfless actions by our members undoubtedly prevented this from becoming a much more serious situation,” says Sgt. Pierre Chiasson with the Caraquet RCMP. “At the end of the day, everyone made it home safely – that’s the level of service that we are consistently aiming to provide to our communities.”
The RCMP would also like to thank the members of the public who stopped at the scene to offer their assistance.
