A brazen border-crossing attempt earlier this month led to arrests and a dangerous getaway attempt, authorities say.
On April 13, 2025, three foreign nationals were spotted crossing into Canada via the Fort Erie train bridge, where a vehicle was waiting on the Canadian side. Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Border Integrity Members swiftly responded, apprehending one individual immediately. A second migrant fled on foot but was later caught, while a third successfully entered the waiting vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle then attempted to evade authorities, nearly striking several RCMP officers during the escape. After a 10-day manhunt, the migrant and the driver surrendered to police on April 23.
The migrant, identified as Alexander Cardenas, a Cuban national, was transferred to the Peace Bridge Port of Entry in Fort Erie. After an assessment by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), he was deemed ineligible to enter Canada and was returned to the U.S.
The driver, Yenny Justo, who is Cardenas’ wife, was arrested and now faces multiple charges, including dangerous driving, conspiracy, and failing to report under the Customs Act.
Justo was held for a bail hearing in St. Catharines court.
The RCMP continues to investigate the incident, emphasizing the dangers of illegal border crossings and the legal consequences for those involved.
