A town employee in St. George’s is facing criminal charges after allegedly fabricating an armed robbery and stealing thousands in cash from the town office.
Bay St. George RCMP responded to a report of an armed robbery at the municipal office shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29. Upon arrival, officers began an investigation, but quickly determined that no robbery had occurred.
Instead, police say the report was false and that the caller — identified as 61-year-old Mary Spicer, an employee of the town — had staged the incident. Evidence gathered at the scene suggested Spicer stole approximately $11,000 in cash from the office before contacting police.
Spicer was arrested and is now facing charges of public mischief and theft over $5,000. She has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date. The investigation remains ongoing.
Bay St. George RCMP reminds the public that making a false report of a crime to police is a criminal offence.
