The Guns & Hoses Charity Hockey Game was a thrilling showdown, with the Hoses staging a late-game push to secure a 9-8 win over the Guns in front of an energetic crowd.
Players from the Smithers and Houston police family suited up for the Guns, bringing their best to the ice. The team came out firing, opening the scoring and building an early lead. However, the Hoses quickly battled back, evening the score and keeping the pressure on. The game remained tight until a penalty against Staff/Sergeant Mark Smaill landed him in the box, giving the Hoses the opening they needed to take control.
“I was just giving the team a chance to showcase their skills… but it turns out, they could have used me on the ice instead of in a timeout” said S/Sgt. Smaill with a smile.
While the Hoses claimed bragging rights this year, the biggest winner was the Houston Volunteer Firefighters Charitable Association, with the event raising approximately $2,100 to support local initiatives. The game, organized by Gage Stanyer of the Houston Fire Department showcased community spirit and friendly competition.
“This game represents more than just a night of hockey—it reflects the longstanding relationship, friendship, and reliance between emergency services,
” said Corporal Nathan Fox of the Houston RCMP detachment. “It’s a great way to bring the community together while supporting a good cause
.”

Event organizer Gage Stanyer also expressed gratitude for the strong community turnout.
“The funds stay right here in the community, and I really appreciate everyone coming together and making it a great time for everyone
,” said Gage Stanyer.
The Guns & Hoses tradition continues to strengthen bonds between first responders and the community, proving once again that when it comes to teamwork, everyone wins.
