A 23-year-old man, Anthony Karl Kurucz, is guilty of manslaughter in the death of his three-month-old son, ruled Justice G. H. Poelman in Calgary court on March 26.
The assault happened on April 24, 2018, and he was charged with second-degree murder on March 23, 2020. Kurucz was watching his son while the boy’s mother Brylee Cyluck took their dog to a vet. The couple weren’t living together at the time.
Jayden was taken to Rockyview General Hospital with serious head trauma and transferred to Alberta Children’s Hospital. He was taken off life-support on April 27, 2018. Jayden’s death was caused by rapid acceleration/deceleration which led to his multiple internal head and brain stem injuries.
Kurucz’s motive to injure Jayden was his anger and frustration as shown in his text exchanges with the baby’s mother Brylee Cyluck and as he described in his final statement to police
Police started a 3.5-month undercover operation called Operation Honest to charge Kurucz. In the fictional organization, undercover officers pretended to have a hot-shotting business of construction supplies throughout Alberta, operating out of a garage in Calgary, selling explosives in Regina, and activities involving illegal imports from the United States.
In the last scenario, Kurucz explained in detail to undercover officers his involvement in the death of Jayden. He was arrested shortly after. He was frustrated and angry with a crying baby and annoyed about unexpected veterinarian costs.
Court heard that Kurucz had a challenging childhood, a possible diagnosis of ADHD, receipt of AISH payments and possibly lower than average intellectual functioning. Kurucz will be sentenced at a later date.
