COLD LAKE, Alta., —A man is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Cold Lake on Thursday afternoon, prompting an investigation by Alberta’s police watchdog. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been deployed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, which began as a domestic call.
According to an RCMP media release, officers were called to a residence in Cold Lake at approximately 4:48 p.m. on June 25, 2026. Upon arrival, police determined that a suspect inside the home was in possession of a firearm. The two other occupants of the residence were able to flee safely.
RCMP officers attempted to communicate with the armed individual, but those attempts were unsuccessful. In response, the Emergency Response Team was called to assist at the scene. During a subsequent altercation with police, at least one officer discharged their service weapon, striking the suspect. The man was pronounced deceased at the scene. No officers sustained injuries during the altercation.
In compliance with legislative requirements, the CEO of the Police Review Commission was immediately notified, leading to the deployment of ASIRT to conduct an independent investigation. The RCMP has stated it will provide full support to ASIRT investigators, emphasizing its commitment to accountability and transparency.
Independent of ASIRT’s investigation, the RCMP’s internal review process has been implemented to gather a full account of what took place during this incident. RCMP training, policy, police response, and the officer’s duty status will be subject to review. The RCMP is, of course, fully cooperating with ASIRT. All media inquiries about this incident should now be directed to ASIRT at 780-641-9099.
