Calgary Police Service are asking for the public’s help to identify a man believed to be involved in a bank fraud scheme operating in the city.
On Wednesday, May 20, at about 5:38 p.m., a victim received a phone call that appeared on caller ID as the Bank of Montreal (BMO). The caller identified themselves as a representative from the BMO fraud investigations department and told the victim her debit and credit cards had been compromised.
The caller had detailed personal information, including the victim’s full name, address and date of birth. Based on this information, the victim was persuaded to disclose her banking personal identification number (PIN), cut up her debit and credit cards and await a courier who would collect them.
At about 6 p.m., a grey Chevrolet SUV attended the victim’s residence and picked up the cards.
At about 8:15 p.m., the victim received a legitimate text alert from BMO security regarding a $12,500 transaction at the Ace Casino, located at 4040 Blackfoot Trail S.E. At that point, the victim realized she had been defrauded and contacted BMO to cancel her cards.
The suspect is described as a man in his mid‑20s, about 5’9” tall, weighing roughly 160 pounds, with short black hair and a black beard. He was last seen wearing glasses, a long grey overcoat and black pants.
