On April 14, at approximately 3:06 a.m., Wood Buffalo RCMP received a complaint regarding animal welfare. Several social media posts with video of a dog being abandoned at the end of Amoco Road, on the Gregoire Lake Reserve on April 13, led to multiple complaints to the RCMP. Prior to police involvement, the dog had been located and was being cared for by Fort McMurray SPCA.
The Police investigation identified a suspect and on April 20 they were arrested by Wood Buffalo RCMP without incident.
The female, a 22-year-old resident of Fort McMurray, is facing charges:
- Causing Animals unnecessary suffering
The female, who cannot be named until an Information is sworn, was released from Police custody on an Undertaking with conditions. She is set to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice on May 27, 2026.
