Calgary police have laid charges against an 18-year-old man following a violent stabbing incident that left three people injured at the Calgary Stampede last month.
On August 26, officers executed a search warrant at a residence in Calgary. The search resulted in the seizure of a folding knife and clothing that investigators say are consistent with what the suspect was seen wearing and using during the incident.
As a result, Irfan Mohammadi, 18, of Calgary, has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault.
Mohammadi is scheduled to make his next appearance in court on Sept. 2.
The investigation began on the evening of July 8, when police were called to reports of an assault near the Euroslide on the Stampede Midway at approximately 11:05 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found one man in medical distress. He was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition, which was later upgraded to stable.
Shortly after the initial call, police responded to two other reports of injured individuals: a youth near 17th Avenue S.E. and Macleod Trail S.E., and another man near Erlton Street S.W. and 27th Avenue S.W. Investigators quickly determined that both were additional victims of the same stabbing incident that occurred on the Midway. Both were taken to hospital with serious, but stable, injuries.
At the time, police stated the attack wasn’t believed to be random, but the suspect remained at large. Investigators had also appealed to the public, believing that numerous witnesses were present during the altercation and that some may have captured the incident on their cellphones.
The case was taken on by the CPS District 1 General Investigations Unit. Through an extensive investigation that included reviewing CCTV footage and conducting witness interviews, police identified a suspect.
