Jelisa Maschki (Calgary Police photo)
A 29-year-old man from British Columbia has been charged in the death of 23-year-old Jelisa Maschki, whose body was found on a northeast Calgary pathway last December.
Calgary police were called to the Nose Creek Pathway near the 1100 block of 32 Avenue N.E. at approximately 4 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 9, 2024, after a passerby discovered a woman in medical distress. Maschki was rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition but later succumbed to her injuries.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy and confirmed her identity. In the days that followed, investigators determined that her death was the result of a fatal altercation that occurred on the pathway the evening before, sometime between 9 and 11 p.m. on Dec. 8.
After an extensive investigation that involved analyzing evidence from the scene, police have charged Nehemiah Walter John Oslund, 29, of Cranbrook, B.C., with one count of manslaughter.
Investigators believe Maschki and Oslund were unknown to each other and had a brief interaction along the pathway that led to the incident.
Oslund was taken into custody in British Columbia. Calgary police are now working with authorities to arrange his transport to Alberta, after which a court date will be set.
“We want to thank the Cranbrook RCMP for their assistance and co-operation in this investigation,” said Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit. “We have been working diligently since December 2024 to ensure Jelisa’s family and loved ones were able to have some closure in this investigation.”
