On Feb. 1, Piikani Nation RCMP started an investigation into drug trafficking on the Nation. This was a result of a complaint of a suspected drug transaction happening behind a local convenience store.
Police went to the convenience store and located two suspects. Jonah Shining Double, 41, of Piikani Nation was charged with trafficking fentanyl and meth, and weapons-related offences.
Police seized Percocet pills, Canadian currency, a scale, and three throwing knives.
As a result of further investigation, on Feb. 2, RCMP executed a search warrant at a residence in the Townsite of Brocket. They seize 2.23 grams of purple, yellow and orange suspected Fentany, 0.54 grams of suspect Crystal Methamphetamine, multiple scales, tin foil, a pellet gun, and several edged weapons including axes, machetes and knives.
After a Judicial Interim Release Hearing, Shining Double was remanded into custody until his next court appearance on Feb. 5, for a show cause hearing at the Alberta Court of Justice in Lethbridge, Alta.
The second suspect was released without charges.
Piikani Nation recently declared a state of emergency over an opioid crisis. Piikani RCMP say they are dedicated to doing whatever they can to get these illegal drugs off the Nation. RCMP are encouraging the public to report any crime.
