Calgary Police have charged a man believed to be responsible for a series of sexual assaults dating back to 2011 and 2012.
In June 2025, the victim, who is now an adult, came forward to report three incidents of sexual assault that occurred when she was nine and 10 years old. The man was known to the victim as a member of her extended family.
It is believed the assaults took place at three separate locations:
- The first incident occurred at the man’s residence.
- The second took place during a family gathering at the victim’s home.
- The third occurred at the man’s workplace.
In each instance, the man isolated the victim before sexually assaulting her.
Following an investigation, Engelbert Serrano CELIS, 54, has been charged with:
- Three counts of sexual assault of a victim under the age of 16
- Three counts of sexual interference with a child under the age of 16
CELIS will next appear in court on Friday, Aug. 15, 2025.
“The mental and emotional impacts of sexual assault can last a lifetime,” said District 8 Insp. Darry Midtdal. “The victim in this case showed tremendous courage by coming forward many years later to report the sexual abuse she endured as a child by someone she had trusted and considered a family member.”
In Canada, there is no time limit on reporting a sexual assault. Anyone who believes they are a victim of sexual assault is encouraged to report it, even if many years have passed since the incident.
