On Jan. 31 Winnipeg Police charged a 16-year-old male was arrested and charged with robbery and manslaughter in the death of 27-year-old Peter Filip on Nov. 11, 2023 in the the city’s West Alexander neighbourhood.
On Jan. 11, police arrested a 14-year-old male and charged him with robbery and firearm offences.
Between Dec. 11 and Dec. 20, 2023, investigators arrested two 14-year-old males, a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old male and have charged them with manslaughter.
Police say that at approximately 2 a.m., Filip was standing outside a vendor in the 1100 block of Arlington Street when a group of males confronted him. The group repeatedly assaulted the victim and escalated with one of the suspects fatally stabbing the victim. One of the suspects also produced a firearm with which he struck the victim during the assault. The suspects fled on foot.
While fleeing from the first incident, four of the suspects approached three male youth victims, aged 14 to 16 years, near Logan Avenue and Tecumseh Street, physically assaulted and robbed them of their clothing while brandishing the firearm. One of the victims attended hospital and received medical treatment for an upper-body injury. The suspects fled on foot.
Following the second incident, the four suspects attended near Salter Street and Burrows Avenue and requested a ride from an unsuspecting motorist. The suspects entered the 28-year-old male victim’s vehicle, presented the knife, and physically assaulted him.
During the assault, one of the suspects attempted to discharge the firearm at the victim; however, the firearm misfired. The suspects unsuccessfully attempted to rob the victim of his vehicle; however, he was able to disarm one of the suspects of the firearm (a sawed-off rifle), retake control of his vehicle, and attend police headquarters for assistance. The victim sustained an upper-body injury and didn’t require medical attention.
