WHISTLER, B.C. — An investigation is underway after human remains were discovered in Alta Lake near Rainbow Park on Sunday afternoon, prompting a multi-agency recovery effort, according to Sea to Sky RCMP.
Police were notified of the remains just before 3:30 p.m. on June 21, 2026. Officers attended the scene and were assisted in the recovery by Whistler Fire Services, the BC Conservation Officer Service, and the Whistler Sailing Association.
The identity of the individual has not been released, and authorities say the BC Coroner Service has taken over the investigation to determine the cause and circumstances of the death.
“Details of the individual located will not be released pending an investigation by the BC Coroner Service,” said Corporal Katrina Boehmer, Media Relations Officer for the Sea to Sky RCMP.
Alta Lake, a popular recreational destination located just south of Whistler Village, sees heavy use from swimmers, paddleboarders, and sailors, particularly during the summer months. Rainbow Park is one of the lake’s most frequented public beaches.
Police are acknowledging that members of the public may have witnessed the recovery operation or the events leading up to it.
“We recognize that several individuals may have witnessed this incident, and we want them to know they are welcome to contact our RCMP Victim Services team if they have been affected in any way and feel they would benefit from support,” added Boehmer.
The RCMP Victim Services program provides emotional support, practical assistance, and referrals to community resources for those impacted by traumatic events.
No further details are expected to be released until the coroner’s investigation is complete. Anyone with information or concerns is asked to contact the Sea to Sky RCMP at (604) 932-3044.
