Homicide investigators say a 69‑year‑old man has died after a late‑night shooting at the Whatcom Road Park & Ride encampment, and believe the attack was targeted and isolated.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) confirmed Wednesday that the victim, a resident of the encampment, succumbed to his injuries in hospital. His name is being withheld while next‑of‑kin notifications continue.
IHIT says the case does not appear linked to gang activity or extortion. Investigators are still working to determine motive.
The shooting was reported around 11:11 p.m. on March 23, when Abbotsford Police patrol officers were called to the Park & Ride, which currently hosts a large homeless encampment. Officers secured the scene and found the victim suffering from life‑threatening injuries.
IHIT has now taken conduct of the file and is working alongside the Abbotsford Police Department’s Major Crime Unit, Forensic Identification Service and the BC Coroners Service.
“Crime scenes such as this one can be complex due to the outdoor component and exposure to the elements,” Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT said. “You can expect investigators in the area for some time speaking with witnesses and searching the area.”
Police are asking anyone with information to contact the IHIT information line at 1‑877‑551‑IHIT (4448) or email ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
