On February 4, 2026, four snowmobilers became stuck in what turned out to be the closed area of
Holt Creek.
“Golden, BC and its surrounding areas attract snowmobilers from all over the world. For
snowmobilers who traverse the backcountry, especially within an alpine environment, it is essential
to plan ahead and be well-prepared for quickly changing environmental conditions,” says GoldenField RCMP Media Relations Officer Constable Donna Freeman. “Precautions need to be made to
carry emergency supplies, pack extra clothing, a cell phone power bank, know your limits, and to be
very careful not to go out of bounds in avalanche prone areas.”
In this case, the snowmobilers received a $575 fine for Use or Operate a Motor Vehicle in Closed
Area and will be responsible to pay for the helicopter for recovery of their snowmobiles.
The RCMP remind those enjoying outdoor activities to exercise caution and be prepared for
potential risks.
On February 16, 2026, at approximately 1921 hrs, frontline officers were called to a fatal motor
vehicle collision on the Trans Canada Highway west of Golden, BC at the Donald Weigh Scales.
Officers arrived and located a Kenworth tractor against a concrete median barrier and fixed traffic
light. The tractor sustained extensive damage.
The investigation has determined that contributing factors were speed relative to icy and snow
covered road conditions and the driver not wearing a seatbelt. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor
in the collision.
“The RCMP reminds motorists the importance of wearing seatbelts as they significantly reduce the
risk of serious injury or death in the event of a motor vehicle collision and to drive to road
conditions,” says Golden-Field RCMP Media Relations Officer Constable Donna Freeman.
The lone 63-year-old male driver succumbed to his injuries. Golden-Field RCMP thanks those who
assisted in providing life saving measures.
