The Parkland RCMP detachment is issuing a public warning as it investigates reports of a potential police impersonator using a suspicious vehicle to stop motorists in and around Parkland County, Alta.
The vehicle is described as a black Chevrolet Tahoe, believed to be a 2015 model. The SUV is notably equipped with a push bar on the front and a specialized lighting package that emits both yellow and blue lights. Authorities caution that the professional-looking setup is designed to closely resemble an unmarked police vehicle.
Police report that the driver of this Tahoe has allegedly used the lights in an attempt to pull over other vehicles. Concerns are heightened by additional reports of the vehicle being driven erratically.
“In the interest of public safety, we are urging residents to be vigilant,” said a spokesperson for the Parkland RCMP. “We want the public to be aware of this vehicle and to know the proper steps to take if they feel uneasy about a traffic stop.”
The RCMP advises any motorist who is signaled to stop by a vehicle matching this description, and who has doubts about its legitimacy, to take the following steps:
- Call 911 immediately if you feel unsafe. Dispatchers can confirm whether a legitimate police officer is in the area.
- Do not immediately pull over in a secluded or dark area. It is acceptable to slow down, activate your hazard lights, and proceed to a well-lit, public location like a gas station or a police detachment.
- Request official identification. A genuine police officer will readily provide their name and badge number.
The investigation is ongoing as officers work to identify the vehicle and its driver.
Anyone who may have encountered this black Chevrolet Tahoe or experienced a similar suspicious interaction is urged to contact the Parkland RCMP directly at 825-220-7267.
The RCMP reiterates that they take these incidents extremely seriously, as impersonating a police officer is a criminal offence that undermines public trust and safety. Further information will be released to the public as the investigation progresses.
