On May 26, 2025, a fire started in the Weyakwin area. Fire investigators with the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency began investigating the cause and origin of the fire, known as the Ditch 2 fire, which spread and caused structure damage as well as the evacuation of several communities.
It was determined the wildfire was human-caused and Waskesiu RCMP began a criminal investigation. As a result, 29-year-old Jason Halkett from La Ronge was charged with one count, arson – damage to property, Section 434, Criminal Code. Officers worked to locate and arrest him.
On August 27, 2025, Saskatoon Police Service arrested him in Saskatoon.
