RCMP arrest man.
On June 7, 2024, the Rankin Inlet RCMP located a deceased individual and the death was suspicious in nature. RCMP were able to identify a male suspect and began searching for him.
This lead the RCMP to issuing multiple “shelter in place” alerts. The suspect was located near the local firing range, just outside the community. Upon making contact, the suspect refused to surrender to police. RCMP Crisis Negotiators were able to establish communications with the suspect, who surrendered to police and was arrested without incident.
On June 8 the Nunavut RCMP Major Crimes Unit charged Jack Ekwalak, 43, with first-degree murder.
“We thank the community for their cooperation during the investigation and for their patience in the last few days. I want to send my deepest condolences to the family of the victim”, said Sergeant Patrick Frenette of the Rankin Inlet RCMP Detachment.
