Middle-aged Sask. man sent to prison for having sex with child and filming it

44-year-old Saskatoon, Sask., man Jeric Villareal Mendoza has been sentenced to about 7.5 years in prison for grooming his daughter’s 14-year-old friend, taking her virginity, and filming it.

On Nov. 20, Mendoza was sentenced to 2,719 days in a federal penitentiary. He was arrested in January after members of the Sask. ICE Unit raided a Saskatoon home.

On his phone and camera, police found 110 child pornography photos of the victim. Saskatoon Judge Doug Agnew called the underage victim AB in his written decision. There were also 43 child pornography videos, 42 of them on AB. Twenty of the videos were of AB and the accused engaging in sexual acts, and all show AB wearing goggles he forced her to wear.

Mendoza’s daughter had a birthday party and the victim was invited. Mendoza found and photographed her identification and, from her notebook, her personal contact and emergency contact information.

Mendoza texted her and came up with an elaborate scheme to conceal his identity. He set up an email account under a different name and using Voice over Internet Protocol to text her without disclosing his phone number. He called himself Chris and said he was 30 and from Edmonton.

He got her to take nude photos and email them to him. He told her to delete everything so there wouldn’t be any trace. The girl told “Chris” that she was 14, and that she was a “cutter,” and she showed him her scars.

He convinced her to have sex with him. She was a virgin and he promised to pay her for sex and to video it. He continued to hide his identity and rented an Airbnb apartment in Saskatoon under a false name for Oct. 26, 2022.

Instead of giving her that address, he sent her to numerous addresses by text messages. He had her stop and wait at a street corner at one point to make sure she wasn’t being followed and didn’t tell anyone where she was going.

At the apartment, the girl still didn’t see who he was and he made her wear goggles that completely obstructed her vision. He gave her $1,500 to allow him to take her virginity and film it.

Afterwards, Mendoza continued to contact AB and scheduled another sexual encounter for December 2022. He was going to pay her again, he said. He suggested to her that they have a threesome. He tracked AB’s periods so he could ejaculate inside her without a condom and not getting her pregnant.

He forced her to delete their messages and demanded photos from her.

Mendoza rented another Airbnb apartment but his plan was disrupted by a counsellor at AB’s school who had become aware of the situation and called AB’s mother, who went to the police.

Mendoza was born into poverty in the Philippines, and started working at an early age to help support his family. He did well in school and went to university, earning an MBA. He came to Canada in 2014 and was self-employed. Him and his wife have two children. His wife worked outside the home and he worked from home and looked after the children.

Judge Agnew said he was concerned about Mendoza’s high-risk to re-offend and his lack of empathy for AB.
