Charges have been laid nearly a year after a shocking incident in Whistler where a man was seen holding a child over a hotel balcony, sparking panic among Canada Day celebrants.
Jason Frost, 45, faces one count of abandoning a child and one count of failing to provide the necessaries of life, the Sea to Sky Whistler RCMP confirmed Monday. The charges stem from a July 1, 2024, disturbance at a Village Stroll hotel, where witnesses reported a man dangling a child over a railing as a woman screamed inside.
Police initially apprehended Frost and a woman under the Mental Health Act, and the child received medical attention.
“This was a highly visible event as Whistler was in the midst of its Canada Day Celebrations,” said Constable Graebling, media relations officer for the Sea to Sky Whistler RCMP. “We recognize the impact the incident had on individuals who witnessed this unfold in our community that day.”
Graebling praised bystanders for their quick action.
“We are incredibly thankful for the multiple witnesses that alerted the RCMP which enabled our officers to act swiftly and professionally in managing this high-risk situation. Their cooperation and actions were key that day in saving a child’s life.”
With the case now before the courts, RCMP say they cannot release further details. However, they emphasized community vigilance in child welfare cases, urging anyone suspecting abuse or neglect to contact the Ministry of Children and Family Development.
