After a complex fraud investigation, three people have now been charged and $70,000 worth of off-road vehicles, cash, forged documents and forgery equipment have been seized.
In January, investigators learned that stolen identity documents had been used to fraudulently purchase two snowmobiles in Calgary and to attempt additional fraudulent purchases across Alberta and Saskatchewan.
After a four-month investigation, police now believe that between November and December 2025, personal information including drivers’ licenses, passports, birth certificates and social insurance numbers were stolen by a group of offenders who then went on to purchase snowmobiles and off-road vehicles, as well as a rental property in Calgary. It is believed that the suspects used forgery equipment to create fraudulent identification with the victim’s personal information.
On April 3, police executed a warrant in the 2500 bock of 21 Street S.W. and seized:
· Forgery instruments
· Fraudulent identification
· Over $6,200 in Canadian and US currency
· Two fraudulently purchased Polaris side by side off road vehicles
As a result, police arrested and charged two people in relation.
Cyrta LATAMENE, 24, of Calgary was charged with:
· Two counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000
· 11 counts of possession of forged documents
· Nine counts of possession of forged passports
· Five counts of possession of identity documents
· Four counts of identity theft
· One count of possession of forgery instruments
· One count of possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000
· One count of possession of stolen mail
· One count of forgery
· One count of identify fraud
LATAMENE will next appear in court Tuesday, May 12, 2026.
Mahad MUMIN, 24, of Calgary has been charged with:
· Two counts of stolen property over $5,000
· Two counts of possession of forged documents
· One count of possession of counterfeit money
· One count of possession of stolen mail
· One count of possession of forgery instrument
· Two counts of failure to comply with a release order
MUMIN was also arrested on 17 outstanding warrants. He will next appear in court Tuesday, May 5, 2026.
Liam RICHARDSON, 20, of Calgary was charged by way of warrant for one count of identity theft.
“This was a complex and co-ordinated fraud investigation that highlights the significant harm identity theft causes to victims and communities,” said acting Insp. Darrin Chaplin of the Calgary Police Service. “Thanks to collaborative police work and diligent investigative efforts, we were able to disrupt this operation, recover stolen property valued at more than $70,000 and hold those responsible accountable. We encourage the public to safeguard their personal information and report any suspected fraud to police as soon as possible.”
