COCHRANE, Alta.- On Aug. 22, members of the Cochrane RCMP Detachment conducted inland water patrols on Ghost Lake, Alberta. RCMP officers monitored activities on the lake, while promoting safe and responsible use of Alberta’s waterways.
During the patrol, RCMP officers rescued a paddleboarder who had fallen into the cold water and was struggling to stay afloat. Members responded within approximately one minute of the incident, resulting in the safe rescue of the individual.
Throughout the day, officers interacted with numerous lake users and conducted several safety and compliance checks. While on patrol, members observed and interacted with approximately seventeen vessels carrying 114 occupants, as well as one personal watercraft. Officers also spoke with several paddleboarders and responded to a boat launch complaint.
The Cochrane RCMP would like to remind lake users that, although summer may be winding down, there are still many opportunities to enjoy our lakes and waterways. All users must ensure they are operating safely and in compliance with applicable regulations. This includes conducting routine inspections of safety equipment on boats and ensuring that all required safety gear is readily available and in good working order.
As paddleboarding continues to grow in popularity, it is important that paddleboarders understand and comply with all necessary rules and regulations. Paddleboarders are reminded that they are required to carry a properly fitted personal flotation device (PFD) and a sound-signalling device, such as a whistle, while on the water. Failure to do so may result in a $250 fine and removal from the lake.
During these patrols, eleven paddleboarders were directed to leave the water and were invited to return once properly equipped with a personal flotation device.
“Safety on our waterways is a shared responsibility,” says S/Sgt. Chad Fournier, Cochrane RCMP Acting Detachment Commander. “A simple oversight, such as failing to wear or carry the required safety equipment, can quickly become a life-threatening situation. We encourage all lake users to take the necessary precautions before heading out on the water.”
The Cochrane RCMP thanks all lake users who continue to make safety a priority and reminds the public that responsible decisions help ensure everyone can enjoy Alberta’s waterways safely.
