MELVILLE, Sask., – A 55-year-old Melville man is in custody and facing 12 criminal charges, including two counts of attempted murder, following a shooting on Sunday night that left two RCMP officers with serious injuries.
Markus Dodge, 55, was arrested early Monday morning after an hours-long standoff at a home on 8th Avenue West. He is scheduled to appear in Yorkton Provincial Court on June 23.
The incident began on June 21 at approximately 9:35 p.m., when Melville RCMP received a report of an assault at the home. Investigators have since determined that an altercation took place between Dodge and another individual, during which Dodge allegedly threatened and assaulted the person. That individual did not report physical injuries to police.
When officers arrived at the scene, they were met with gunfire. Police say a firearm was discharged, striking two Melville RCMP officers. Both were rushed to hospital by EMS, where they remain in stable condition. However, Saskatchewan RCMP noted that their injuries are severe and “potentially life-altering in nature.” The force has requested privacy for the officers and their families as they recover.
Following the shooting, the armed suspect remained barricaded inside the residence. A large police presence descended on the area, including the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Emergency Response Team, Police Dog Services, and the Crisis Negotiation Team. The Regina Police Service’s SWAT team and the Government of Saskatchewan’s Protection and Response Team also assisted.
Despite the gravity of the situation, Saskatchewan RCMP determined that a dangerous person alert wasn’t necessary, as the suspect was contained to the residence and there was no elevated risk to the public.
The standoff concluded at approximately 2 a.m. on Monday when Dodge and another occupant exited the home. Dodge was taken into custody and remains in jail. The second occupant was detained briefly but was released and has since been cleared of any involvement in the incident.
Following a continued investigation by the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Serious Crimes Unit, firearms were recovered from the home. In addition to the two attempted murder charges, Dodge faces two counts each of aggravated assault, discharging a firearm with intent, and pointing a firearm, as well as one count of unlawful possession of a firearm. In connection with the initial altercation, he also faces charges of uttering threats and assault with a weapon.
Investigators do not believe there is any further risk to public safety.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact 310-RCMP (7267).
