British Columbia’s police watchdog is investigating after a man was seriously injured during an early‑morning encounter with RCMP officers in Penticton on Tuesday.
Penticton RCMP were called around 4:24 a.m. on March 3 to a report of a man allegedly smashing windows near Lakeshore Drive and Winnipeg Street. Police say an interaction occurred when officers arrived, during which a Conducted Energy Weapon was used.
Additional officers responded after the first member requested immediate assistance. During the response, the suspect was pinned between a police vehicle and a retaining wall.
RCMP say officers provided medical aid at the scene before the man was taken to hospital with serious injuries. One officer was also transported to hospital with non‑life‑threatening injuries and has since been released.
The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been notified and is attending the scene to examine police actions. The area was cordoned off to support the investigation.
RCMP are conducting a separate investigation into the suspect’s alleged mischief. Police say no further information will be released while the IIO’s investigation is underway.
