A 16‑year‑old boy has been charged with manslaughter after a man was found dead in the Lac La Ronge Indian Band community of Bell’s Point earlier this week, Saskatchewan RCMP say.
Police respond to injured man, declare death at scene
La Ronge RCMP were called to a residence in Bell’s Point at about 10:10 p.m. on Feb. 25 for a report of an injured person. Officers arrived and found an adult man with critical injuries. EMS later declared the 38‑year‑old, who was from the La Ronge area, deceased. His family has been notified and victim services offered.
Youth arrested within 20 minutes
Roughly 20 minutes after the initial call, officers arrested a male youth at another residence in the same community. Saskatchewan RCMP’s Homicide Investigation Unit (HIU) took over the file shortly afterward.
Manslaughter charge laid
Following further investigation, the HIU charged a 16‑year‑old from the La Ronge area on Feb. 26 with one count of manslaughter under Section 236(b) of the Criminal Code. The Youth Criminal Justice Act prohibits police from identifying the accused.
RCMP say the victim and the accused were known to each other but are not releasing details about their relationship or the victim’s identity.
The youth is scheduled to appear in La Ronge Provincial Court on Feb. 27 (Information #Y412451).
The Homicide Investigation Unit, formerly the Major Crimes Unit, is part of the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Major Crimes Branch. The unit investigates homicides, suspicious deaths, missing‑person cases where foul play is suspected, and criminal explosions involving death or injury.
