On Mar. 9, 2025, Nanton RCMP responded to reports of people on the ice in the area of Chain Lakes Reservoir.
RCMP learned that an ice fishing structure had broken through the lake ice and a vehicle with several people on the same section of ice, were attempting to rectify the situation.
Nanton RCMP would like to remind the community that entry onto the lake ice at this time of year could be potentially dangerous and checking ice conditions is recommended.
In this season with warmer temperatures, it is extremely important to consider these safety risks. If you are going out on the ice, ensure you are checking on the ice depth, tell someone you will be there in case you do not come back as scheduled, be aware of aerated lakes, and local fishing information.
Safety gear such as ice picks, flotation devices and warm identifiable gear should be worn to protect you, make you easier to find, and to help keep you safe if failure in the ice results during your activities.
Beyond the risk to yourself, is the unnecessary risk to your local first responders, who may need to be called in for a rescue.
