On July 15, 2024, Prince District RCMP responded to a report of a damaged electric fence and the cutting off of three horses’ tail hair at a property in Union. The horse tails were cut on two separate occasions, the first occurred about a week prior and the second occurred over the week end of July 14.

RCMP say horse tails play a key role in protecting horse from insects, and the loss of a tail can have adverse effects.

It could take years before these horses see their tails return to normal. Horse tails take two weeks or more to grow just one centimetre, according to equine experts. They say horse tails can be used to make many things, from crafts to jewelry, or even violin bows.

Police are asking for public information to solve this crime by calling Prince District RCMP at 902-436-9300 or PEI Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
