Drayton Valley RCMP called in RCMP Police Dog Services to help locate a suspect, Robert Sherwood, 41, of St. Albert, who had fled into the woods in -40 degrees Celsius. He was located about one kilometre into the woods, arrested, and treated for hypothermia.
Inside Sherwood’s vehicle, police found a sawed-off shotgun, bear mace and ID related to a person known by police.
Sherwood was charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, two counts of possession of a weapon contrary to an order, seven counts of failing to comply with a probation order, and three counts of possession of a controlled substance.
The arrest came after Drayton Valley RCMP got a call about a suspicious truck in the ditch on Hwy 22, near Township Road 502 on Jan. 12. The driver of the vehicle fled before police arrived.
Officers found that though the vehicle had not been reported stolen, the licence plate and VIN information didn’t match.
Sherwood was brought before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody. His next court date is set for Feb. 6, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Drayton Valley.
