A 49-year-old man who was detained for public intoxication has died in Edmonton Police cells on Jan. 5.
When police took him to the police cells, he had a “medical event” say police. EMS was contacted and the onsite paramedic and officers immediately began administering first-aid until their arrival. EMS treated the man but he was pronounced deceased on scene.
Edmonton Police had arrested him after responding to an apartment building in the area of 112 Avenue and 80 Street on the report of trouble with person.
As required by law, the Director of Law Enforcement was notified and has directed that the investigation into this death remain with EPS. An autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024.
Edmonton police say no additional information is available for release at this time.
