A man who was a person of interest in the Dec. 26 death of Delta, B. C. trucker Farah Mohamud, 34, was shot and killed by police on Dec. 28.
Long-haul trucker Mohamud was reported missing to Winnipeg Police on Dec. 23. His abandoned truck was found on Dec. 26 in the West Broadway neighbourhood and he was found deceased at an apartment in the first 100 block of Furby Street.
The suspect in his death was shot and killed after a standoff with Winnipeg Police. He had taken four hostages in the same apartment building, including a three-year-old child.
He barricaded them inside a suite, and it was quickly established that two other adults and a child were also being held against their will inside, said police.
Eventually the other adult (a female) and child were released from the suite, and a male escaped. These victims were all taken into the care of the Tactical Support Team, unharmed. The initial female victim remained inside the suite with the armed male.
Communication and negotiations were established by the Tactical Support Team and Crisis Negotiation Unit. The victim’s life was in imminent danger as the armed man wouldn’t allow her to leave.
At approximately 5:10 p.m., the Tactical Support Team implemented a rescue plan, to save the woman. During the rescue, officers shot and the man was struck by a bullet. He died from his injuries. The victim wasn’t injured.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has been notified and has assumed responsibility for the investigation.
