Portage la Prairie RCMP are investigating after a store was passed counterfeit US banknote that looks authentic.
On Dec. 15, 2023, at 1:15 pm, Portage la Prairie RCMP received a report of a man buying goods at a business on Saskatchewan Avenue in Portage la Prairie with counterfeit US currency.
Officers were advised that a male suspect entered the store a few hours earlier and produced the $100 bank note and completed a purchase. Upon closer inspection, the cashier suspected it was a counterfeit and notified police. The suspect had already left the store.
This counterfeit US banknote looks authentic but the texture and feel of the paper is what alerted staff to its potential of being counterfeit.
RCMP believe other businesses may be targeted and urge those accepting $100 US bank notes to examine them carefully.
