Calgary Police identify homicide victim in drive-by shooting

Calgary Police have identified the victim of a drive-by shooting as 40-year-old Thane Cameron Clayton from Halifax Nova Scotia. His family has been notified.

Calgary Police Homicide Unit investigated after officers were called at about 9:10 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 30, to reports of gunshots in the 600 block of 10th Avenue S.W. in the Beltline. Upon arrival, they found a deceased man with apparent gunshot wounds.

CCTV footage collected from the area confirmed the victim had been walking westbound on 10th Avenue S.W., towards Sixth Street S.W., when a dark-coloured SUV pulled up and an occupant of the vehicle fired multiple shots at him before fleeing the scene. The suspect vehicle was last seen travelling southbound on Sixth Street S.W. and turning onto westbound 13th Avenue S.W.

Calgary Police say say Clayton has ties to Vancouver, B. C., Edmonton, Alta., and Halifax, N.S.

Calgary Police say they don’t have information to suggest whether this was a targeted incident.

Investigators are asking for witnesses or anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage from the area around the time of the shooting to contact police.

“This volatile incident showed a blatant disregard for human life and jeopardized the safety of bystanders,” said Det. Lee Treit of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit. “Video footage and witnesses are vital for us to hold the offenders in this brazen attack accountable, and we are asking for anyone with information to come forward.”
