The Saskatchewan RCMP is alerting the public about a misleading AI-generated image being shared on social media in connection with an ongoing sexual offence investigation.
The image in question is based on an official police sketch released on May 16 as part of the investigation into an incident reported at a business south of Saskatoon on May 9. However, the RCMP has confirmed that the AI-altered version doesn’t match witness descriptions of the suspect.
“We are advising the public not to share this inaccurate image,” said an RCMP spokesperson. “The AI-generated depiction does not align with the details provided by witnesses and could hinder the investigation.”
Authorities are urging the public to refer only to the original forensic sketch, produced by an RCMP Forensic Artist, which remains the most accurate representation of the suspect.
The RCMP is reiterating its call for anyone with information about the suspect to come forward and is re-releasing the official sketch (attached) to assist in identification.
Anyone with information is asked to contact their local RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
Anyone with information about the incident, or who recognizes the sketch of the suspect, is asked to contact Saskatchewan RCMP by dialling 310-RCMP. Information can also be submitted anonymously by contacting Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.saskcrimestoppers.com.
