Calgary man is in custody facing attempted murder and robbery charges after a stabbing in a busy mall parking lot spiraled into a cross-country police investigation.
Airdrie Integrated Rural RCMP say officers were called to the CrossIron Mills parking lot at approximately 6:15 p.m. on April 13, 2026, following a 911 report of a stabbing. When they arrived, they found a male victim suffering from a stab wound to the chest. He was rushed to a Calgary hospital, where he has since been listed in stable condition.
Investigators quickly determined that the victim and the suspect knew each other. The two had met in the mall parking lot to complete a business transaction involving the sale of cell phones. Police say the suspect fled the scene in a vehicle with an undisclosed amount of the victim’s money.
Before being transported to hospital, the victim was able to provide officers with the identity of the suspect. The Airdrie RCMP Criminal Investigation Division took over the case and obtained a Canada-wide arrest warrant.
Information later emerged that the suspect had fled to Surrey, B.C. RCMP requested assistance from the Surrey Police Service, and on April 14, 2026, at approximately 1:10 p.m., the Surrey Police Service Prolific Offender Unit confirmed the suspect was in custody.
Investigators from Airdrie travelled to British Columbia and escorted the suspect back to Alberta on April 16, 2026.
Tariq Hussain, 46, of Calgary, has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and robbery.
On April 17, 2026, a Judicial Interim Release Hearing was held at the Airdrie Detachment, and Hussain was remanded into custody. He is scheduled to appear before the Alberta Court of Justice in Didsbury on April 20, 2026.
