In the early hours of Dec. 27, 2025, Grande Prairie Rural RCMP responded to reports of a shooting in progress on a rural road in the area of Range Road 35 and Township Road 730 in Grande Prairie County. Upon arrival, emergency crews located two victims deceased.
The victims have been identified as 54-year-old David Lagace and 44 -year-old Michelle Lagace.
Initial investigative efforts by police on scene were able to determine a possible suspect. The Alberta RCMP Major Crime Unit was deployed and took over the investigation.
As the investigation unfolded and more information about the crime and suspect was known, RCMP determined that due to the level of violence and circumstances including being armed, that the suspect posed a significant risk to the public. RCMP activated a Police Initiated Public Alert to warn the public of the danger.
On Dec. 27, 2025, just after 1 p.m., police located the suspects vehicle in a rural area near McLennan Alta.. The Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team who was already deployed for public safety, was quickly directed to the area and the suspect was safely taken into custody.
RCMP have charged 42-year-old Curtis Phillip Halladay with two counts of 2nd Degree Murder.
Halladay has been taken before a Justice of the Peace and remanded into custody with his next court date set for Jan. 8, 2026, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Grande Prairie.
“This investigation saw the rapid deployment of a significant amount of police resources managed by the Alberta RCMP Real Times Operation Center in order to promptly investigate the offence, warn the public, and arrest this dangerous individual, “says Staff Seargeant Todd Wiebe of the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit., “our thoughts go out to the family and friends of the victims.”
