A retired Edmonton Police Service (EPS) officer has been criminally charged for unlawfully disclosing confidential investigative details to the media.
William (Bill) Clark, a former staff sergeant with the EPS, was charged Tuesday with breach of trust after allegedly sharing sensitive case information without authorization. The 44-year veteran, who retired on May 10, 2024, now faces legal consequences following an extensive probe by the EPS Professional Standards Branch, with oversight from the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT).
The case was forwarded to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Services in Calgary, where prosecutors determined there were grounds for criminal charges. Clark is set to answer to a single count of breach of trust by a public officer, an offense under the Criminal Code of Canada.
Due to the ongoing court proceedings, EPS officials declined to provide further details, including the nature of the leaked information or the investigations involved.
Clarkâs case highlights the legal and ethical obligations of law enforcement to safeguard sensitive information, even after retirement. His first court appearance has yet to be scheduled.
