Chad Michael Beck, 38, of Edmonton, has been arrested for allegedly trying to defraud a 93-year-old Sherwood Park man of $11,000.
On Jan. 17, the Strathcona County RCMP Property Crime Unit (PCU) were alerted to an ongoing grandparent scam. An unknown person posing as the victim’s grandson was claiming he needed bail money to be released from jail. Investigators were able to determine that the victim’s grandson wasn’t in jail and an investigation was launched.
On Jan. 18, the Strathcona County RCMP PCU arrested Beck attempting to collect the money from the victim. They charged Beck with fraud over $5,000.
Beck was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in St. Albert Provincial Court on Jan. 22.
